Since 9/11, the Bush administration and their legal sycophants in the Justice Department and right-wing think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Federalist Society, have claimed that the criminal regime in Washington has the legal right to employ any tactic to pursue its sordid agenda.

It was not too long ago, when supporting old growth forests meant you were a left wing whacko who liked owls more than people. Of course one has never had owl cut them off in traffic, or believe in the stupidest things imaginable, so maybe one can like owls more. And before that if you supported women's right to vote, or equal rights for the races you were thought to be a bleeding heart with no common sense, who was out to destroy

I haven’t lived in rural Pennsylvania or in rural Indiana, but I have lived in rural upstate New York, in towns where there are so few Democrats that on some local election ballots, not a single position, from town council to justice of the peace, has a contest. As in China, your option is to vote for the Republican candidate, or to leave that line blank. And many of the people in these towns, uniformly white, when they talk politics, spend a lot of their time complaining about black people, immigrants (neither of whom can even be found in the vicinity) and the threat to their guns. Barack Obama is exactly right.
